Huntington, NY - Councilwoman Susan A. Berland welcomed Dens 2 and 4 from Cub Scout Pack 34 to participate in a mock Town Board meeting at Town Hall Tuesday afternoon.  The scouts participated in a "mock town board meeting" orchestrated by Councilwoman Berland, in which the students role-played as council members and as citizens who testified at a public hearing.  In the process, the students learned the duties of a council member as well as the ways citizens can get involved in the democratic process.

In addition to the "mock Town Board meeting" Councilwoman Berland arranged for several Town employees to come and speak about their jobs.  Officer Mary Davis of the Department of Public Safety discussed her role in keeping citizens of the Town safe and Audrey Gallo from the Department of Environmental Waste Management spoke about the Town of Huntington's recycling program.

"Inviting students to Town Hall is one of my favorite aspects of this job," commented Councilwoman Berland.  "Learning about civics, government and citizen responsibility should begin at an early age.  The value of this information is immeasurable and the cub scouts enjoyed their 'board meeting.'  It was a fun time for all."
