Huntington, NY - Councilwoman Susan A. Berland presented
five students from Half Hollow Hills High School West with official
proclamations from the Town of Huntington at last Tuesday's Town Board meeting
for being the recipients of the esteemed National Achievement Scholarship.
The scholarship, given by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, is given
to those who placed within the top 3% of the 160,000 African-American students
interested in receiving the award. The finalists for the scholarship are
chosen based on their overall high school performance, including an evaluation
of their transcript and their S.A.T. scores.
This year's recipients are the following: Niesha Voigt and Kimberly Brazier,
both of whom will attend Brown University, Rachelle Cadet, who will attend
Columbia University, Sara Sodine, who will attend the Wharton School of Business
at the University of Pennsylvania and Victoria Baptiste, who wll attend
Princeton University.
"It is a pleasure and an honor for me to recognize these extraordinary young
women this afternoon," commented Councilwoman Berland. "The National
Achievement Scholarship is a very prestigious award and I am incredibly proud
that High School West has five recipients this year. These young women are
phenomenal students who are extremely well rounded and focused in their
educations. I would personally like to congratulate Niesha, Kimberly,
Rachelle, Sara and Victoria for receiving this very special honor and I wish
them the best in their education and in all of their future
endeavors."
