The Month of March is Women's History month. Each year the Town Supervisor and Board members, along with the Division of Women's Services, celebrates this occasion with a special tribute to women. On March 30, 2011, the Town celebrated Women's History Month with an entertaining assortment of music along with vocal excerpts from famous operas. The event was held at the Huntington Senior Center and was entitled "A Journey of Expression". Refreshments were served and a good time was had by all!
The Women's Veterans Committee consists of women veterans from the Town of Huntington. Its purpose is to develop and carry out the task of erecting a monument in Huntington Veterans Plaza dedicated to Women in the Armed Forces. They meet regularly in Town Hall for this purpose. In addition they are concerned with health issues and rights of women veterans. (See Veterans for more information)
Each year the Town Board and the Division of Women's Services holds a Women's Networking Program. Women meet and exchange information, ideas and services. The program is held in the fall and is open to the public. Last year, on October 27, 2010, over 400 women attended the Town of Huntington's 9th Annual Women's Networking Day at the Larkfield Manor. The theme was "EMPOWERING TODAY'S WOMAN - THE TOOLS FOR SUCCESS". Representatives from not-for-profit agencies and many local businesses attended. They set up booths and offered informaton/demonstrations to all in attendance. Lunch, door prizes and gift bags were included in the festivities.
On January 28, 2011, The Division of Women's Services in conjunction with Councilwoman Susan Berland and HBCAC presented a seminar on "Protecting Our Children from Environmental Toxins."
Another informative seminar, "Creating Futures Free of Violence" was presented on Friday May 20, 2011. Those in attendance learned that 85% of disabled women experience some form of domestic violence by the hands of caregivers.
