MISSION:

 

  • The Office of Minority Affairs is a Division of the Department of Human Services
  • The Office of Minority Affairs' purpose is to maintain a good working relationship with leaders of minority organizations and to establish good rapport between Town Departments and minority residents.
  • To act as a liaison to the minority community to keep residents informed of town programs, employment, services, etc.
  • To be responsible for maintaining and improving the relationship between residents and the town. And to advise Town officials of the concerns of the minority community.

Highlights:

 

The Office of Minority Affairs organizes and oversees the following programs:

  • Black History Program - During Black History Month, at Town Hall nationally known speakers are invited each year to join in the celebration. There is active participation of African American Churches and clergy as well as support from the community.
  • Haitian Heritage Program - Each year, a celebration program is put on by the Haitian community in which the Town participates.
  • Hispanic Heritage Program - Each October a keynote speaker highlights the celebration and a program is put together that involves members of dance groups and musicians.
  • St. Johns Camp - A day camp for kids 3 1/2 to 6 years old that runs for six weeks in the summer. This is a five-day play program.
  • Summer Camp Scholarships Program - Raises money to send eligible children to the YMCA summer camp program and other camps on Long Island.
  • Thanksgiving Day Program - This office coordinates with other agencies in the Town and delivers approximately 500 turkeys with accompanying food baskets to families in need.
  • Christmas Program - Has vouchers available to families needing help within the Town of Huntington.
  • Christmas Shopping Program - Organizing shopping trips for approximately fifty disadvantaged youths.

MINORITY AFFAIRS TASK FORCES:

Anti-Bias Task Force - Purpose is to prevent, monitor and lessen the effects of bias crimes and hate-related harassment. The Task Forces is committed to advocating fair and effective public policy.

Hispanic Task Force - T o advise the Supervisor and Town Board members of plans to strengthen Latino participation in Huntington business and community affairs, to aid in the implementation of these plans, and to address the specific needs of our culturally diverse community.
