MISSION:

IT'S YOUR HISTORY - Join the Celebration!

On April 2, 1653 three English settlers purchased from the Matinecock a portion of land on the north shore of Long Island that, along with subsequent purchases, came to be known as the Town of Huntington, establishing it as among the oldest non-native settlements in the region. In order to foster an understanding and appreciation of Huntington's rich history on the part of all of its residents and facilitate the celebration of this historic anniversary by the entire community, the Town Board appointed a 350th Anniversary Committee in March 2001 to assist in the planning of a year-long, town-wide Anniversary Celebration to be held in 2003.

Questions:

Q. Is the Anniversary Celebration limited to activities dealing only with the original 1653 land purchase?

A. No, although this is the anniversary event triggering the celebration, among the activities planned are exhibitions, programs, and special events exploring all aspects of Huntington's rich history from prior to 1653 to the present.

Q. I don't live in "Huntington Village," but in another area of the Town; does the Anniversary Celebration include my community?

A. Yes, the entire Town of Huntington and its various hamlets and incorporated villages are invited to be a part of the Celebration. Perhaps a community agency in your area of the Town would like to be a part of the festivities by proposing an Anniversary activity (see next question).

Q. How can a community agency propose presentation of an Anniversary activity and have it listed on the Town's official Celebration calendar?

A. Proposals of additional Anniversary activities from community agencies are encouraged. Use the form provided to submit an application for approval by the 350th Anniversary Committee.  (You will need a free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this document.)

Q. I've looked through the Anniversary calendar of events and believe that there are aspects of the history of Huntington and its residents that have not been included in the scheduled activities?

A. While the 350th Anniversary Committee has made every effort to include a diverse range of Anniversary activities, considering the span of more than 350 years and the diverse populations that have come to reside in our community during this span, there will inevitably be some areas of our rich history that are missed. If you are aware of such a gap, please help us to fill it. Contact us with any missing information to help us complete the record on Huntington's history, or consider proposing an Anniversary activity that will help educate the community about this aspect of our history (see previous question).
