Suffolk County Transit connecting buses is also available online at

Where can
I catch a HART bus?
The bus schedule for each route shows
where it operates. Buses will stop at any intersection along the route at
which it is safe to do so. If there is a bus stop sign, bench, or shelter
nearby, please wait there. Plan to arrive at the bus stop at least five
minutes ahead of time and allow extra travel time in bad weather since buses may
be unavoidably delayed.
How can I
pay my fare?
Please have the
exact fare ready when
you board. Each passenger should deposit his or her own fare into the
farebox. Drivers cannot make change. HART accepts one dollar bills;
coins; HART tickets, passes, and transfers; Suffolk County Transit tickets,
tokens, and transfers; MTA Long Island Bus transfers; LIRR/HART monthly
UniTickets; and Suffolk County DSS tokens. HART is a
participating agency in the TransitChek program.

Are
HART transit buses handicap accessible?
Yes. HART buses feature front-end
kneelers, wheelchair lifts, and other equipment that make them accessible to
disabled persons. Wheelchair lifts are also available to passengers using
walkers, canes, braces, or who are otherwise mobility impaired. Bus
drivers will assist individuals with disabilities with boarding, alighting,
wheelchair securement, and the use of other on-board accessibility and safety
equipment.
What if
I have a disability that prevents me from using regularly-scheduled buses for
the general public?
HART operates a
special paratransit program that provides basic mobility within the Town of
Huntington for persons who cannot use regularly-scheduled, fixed-route buses for
the general public because of disability. HART's paratransit program is
operated in full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. It
is a shared-ride, advance-request, curb-to-curb transportation program that
is available only to eligible persons and their traveling companions.
Origin-to-destination service will be provided upon request to ADA Paratransit
Eligible customers, based on
need.
Enrollment is
by application. Verification of your disability
by a licensed health care professional is required as part of the application
process. Approved applicants will be enrolled in the program at the "ADA
Paratransit Eligible" level which is recognized nationwide. Persons found
to be eligible for paratransit at this level by another transit agency may use
HART's paratransit program on a limited, visitor's basis. Paratransit
trips cost $1.25 for each one-way ride. Personal assistance is
limited. Detailed program information is published in the Paratransit
User's Guide . Call for more information.
I am
not disabled, but I am a non-driving senior citizen resident. Can
HART provide me with local transportation?
Yes, under certain
circumstances.
Non-driving residents, age 60 and over, who do not
verify a disability that would make them eligible for paratransit service at the
"ADA Paratransit Eligible" level described above may apply to use HART's
paratransit program at the so-called "Town-Eligible" level.
However,
paratransit service is offered based on user
need, not preference. Because customers at the "Town Eligible" level have
not verified any disability that would prevent them from using
regularly-scheduled, fixed-route buses for the general public, they would
be expected to use regular bus services, rather than paratransit,
whenever regularly-scheduled, fixed-route buses for the general public
operate within 3/4 of a mile of their origin and destination. In
other words, actual need for paratransit would exist only when regular
buses are further than 3/4 of a mile away.
Note too that paratransit service for "Town-Eligible"
customers is not protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act and is offered
on a strictly elective basis. As such, "Town-Eligible" enrollments and
trip requests are assigned lower priority than "ADA Paratransit Eligible"
enrollments and trip requests.
Therefore, HART recommends that individuals with a disability or
impairment-related condition that would affect their ability to use regular
buses apply for enrollment in
HART's paratransit program on the basis of disability, not at
this reduced "Town Eligible" level.
Where
can I get additional information regarding HART's paratransit
program?
An introductory brochure, the enrollment
application, and a user's guide may be downloaded from the Online Library
section of this website under the heading "HART Bus"
at... http://town.huntington.ny.us/permit_forms.cfm, or call for more information.
