MISSION:

The Town Historian is responsible for coordinating Huntington's historic preservation efforts.  The Historian: 

  • serves as secretary to the Historic Preservation Commission, which administers the Town's Historic Preservation Code.
  • has responsiblity for Town-owned historic sites including Town-owned historic cemeteries, the Arsenal (425 Park Avenue), and the Ezra Carll Homestead (49 Melville Road).
  • advises the Town Supervisor and Town Board when requested with respect to matters of historic interest. 
  • acts as liaison with the numerous historical organizations throughout the Town to help ensure the continued preservation of Huntington's rich heritage.

OPERATING ENVIRONMENT:

The Town Historian's Office is located in the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Building at 228 Main Street in Huntington. The building was built as a memorial to the Huntington men who died fighting to preserve the Union during the Civil War and served as the home of the Huntington library from 1892 to 1958.

The building, which is owned by the Huntington Historical Society, also serves as an exhibit space for historic artifacts and is open Monday- Thursday from 12pm to 4pm.

Questions:

When does the Historic Preservation Commission meet?

The Commission generally meets the fourth Monday of the month at 8:00 p.m. in Town Hall Room 114.  To have an item placed on the agenda or to confirm meeting times, please call (631) 351-3244.

Will the Historian reserach my family history or the history of my house?

The Historian is not available to condcut research on individual families or properties.  However, the Historian would be happy to guide your research efforts.  Likewise, the Historian does not maintain a research facility.  Huntington is fortunate to have an excellent municipal archive and numerous historical organizations which do maintain extensive collections of primary source materials.

How do I get a historic marker placed in front of my house?

Huntington has a large number of historic markers placed throughout the Town.  To inquire about the repair of an existing marker or placement of a new marker, please call the Historian's office at (631) 351-3244.

How do I find out about historic cemeteries?

Huntington has dozens of historic cemeteries throughout the Town.  The Historian oversees their maintenance.  In addition, files containing lists of internments are kept by the Historian.  To report vandalism or concerns about maintenance, please call the Historian's office at (631) 351-3244.
